STEP takes a solutions-based approach, grounded in a commitment to the weavers and workers in the industry, to address the complex issues of the handmade carpet industry at their root. Founded in Switzerland in 1995, the non - profit organization established comprehensive fair-trade standards that encompass universal human rights, including the prohibition of child labor, safe working conditions, fair wages, and eco-friendly production that is healthy for the workers, consumers, and the earth.
Certified STEP Fair Trade Partners commit to independent audits throughout their supply chain. Working in close collaboration with the industry, STEP actively supports producer improvements and has developed educational programs empowering weavers and workers on topics such as health, safety, and financial literacy. Through these combined efforts, STEP reinforces industry sustainability and helps preserve centuries-old artisanal skills. STEP is the only non-governmental organization of its kind working in all major handmade rug and carpet-producing countries.
